Step off the treadmill this summer!
As a business owner, you know that success doesn’t come overnight. It takes dedication, determination and lots of hard work.
Many business owners are so focused on their work that they forget to step off the treadmill and take the time to look after themselves. It’s easy to get caught up in the everyday hustle and bustle of business… constantly trying to stay ahead of the competition, meet deadlines and generally shouldering the burden of keeping the business afloat. Under such frequent pressure, if you don’t take the time to look after yourself, it’s easy to become burned out.
When was the last time you had a holiday and allowed your brain to truly switch off?
Now we’re over half way through the year, and approaching the peak holiday season, this blog is here to act as a reminder to business owners to take a break from work to focus on their own mental and physical health.
We all know the benefits a holiday can have – allowing your body and your brain to relax. Taking a break from work is also a great way to gain new perspectives and come back stronger. When you’re working on the same project day in and day out, it’s easy to get stuck in a rut and become frustrated. Taking a step back and taking some time off can help you see things from a different perspective and give you a renewed energy to tackle your work. You may even pick up some new ideas on your travels from the places and businesses you visit.
For some business owners, the prospect of going away on holiday may seem like an impossibility – especially if there are staff holidays to cover. If this is the case, it’s important to carve periods of rest into your daily routine. Whilst the days are longer, an alternative could be taking a long walk in the park, heading out on a bike ride or chilling in a quiet spot with a book.
Down time can help to put things into perspective and you may find yourself returning to thoughts about the business. Thinking about your 3- 5 year plan in this time off can help you to decide what to act on when you return to work following your break. By prioritising areas of focus, you can put plans into action more successfully.
As a final note – it’s important to remember that taking time off to focus on your own mental and physical health doesn’t mean that you’re not committed to your business. On the contrary, it’s a sign that you’re dedicated to your success and want to make sure you’re doing everything you can to reach your goals.
So, as the summer holidays approach and you’re thinking about ways to reset and recharge, remember that taking the time to look after yourself is just as important as working hard. It’s essential to your success and your wellbeing as an individual – and therefore for the business. So don’t be afraid to take a break… you may just come back stronger.
